What makes a romance novel exciting other than the obvious romance and relationship?

I like the interaction between the characters. How that behave with each other and how they talk to each other.
The sexual tension between the characters! I also like heroes who are dark and mysterious–they behave cold and arrogant but they’re really vulnerable and hurt! I love how at the end, they become all loving and stuff! it makes it so much more exciting!
I also like romance novels with a mystery edge–or a major conflict that must be overcome!
War is always a wonderful setting for a romance novel. Wartime behavior is passionate, volatile and impossible to control: Lives are in upheaval; cultures are clashing, there are individual lives getting lost on both sides… It’s a lot like love!
what makes a good romance novel is what the reader does not know. something the characters only know, if you know what i mean?
its something that is later revealed to the audience, that give the plotline a sort of suspense.
its the descrition of the Male character. most people read books to escape the reality of life. So if a woman does not have a man in her life, she turns to a book, where her dream man is there. So basically, every detail about the male sex
Honestly, I never found romance novels very appealing. They are mostly all the same, like they’ve been created with cookie cutters. There is seldom any REAL story besides the romance. Sorry, just my opinion.
The only “romance” books I EVER enjoyed were the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Sure, they were romance but there was always more interesting things going on OTHER then the romance. If you read it you will know what I mean.
One which is more important than the romance.
Really not much into drippy characters who think about nothing but their love for each other. Romance can make a good background to other sorts of novels, but it really doesn’t work for me when it’s the other way around.
Interesting, complex characters make a romance novel good, as does an interesting complex setting, well rendered (as in Trade Winds)
